Dead interesting

2 October 2018

Year 4 recently enjoyed a great experience at the Museum of London Docklands. We visited the temporary Roman Dead exhibition (on until 28 October), all about the archaeological finds from Roman times in the Docklands part of London. There was a talk from two archaeologists who have been lucky enough to have worked on excavating actual Roman skeletons. We learned how to tell things about a skeleton just by looking, such as age or gender, and also how DNA examination can tell us things about a skeleton that we can’t see, such as whereabouts in the Roman Empire they might have come from. The museum is also in a very handsome old building and after lunch we had time to explore, discovering fascinating information and displays about the history of the docks, including period clothing for dressing up and a mock-up of an old East London street.
