Parsons Green Prep children have visited the Hammersmith and Fulham Foodbank several times over the last few years, delivering and sorting donations and learning how this vital charity works. The foodbank now needs to leave its current office after eight years. The space they have been using is too small and there’s no room to grow – or pay an increased rent – so the matter is now urgent. After many months of searching they have been offered the attic space at St Matthew’s Church on the Wandsworth Bridge Road. They moved the foodbank ‘café’ (where they meet with clients, serve breakfast, lunch and hot snacks, distribute the food parcels and have professional advisors on hand) to St Matthew’s about a month ago and it is going very well. The space is large, bright, and very welcoming and they will even be able to run their holiday clubs and cooking and budgeting courses on-site too.
However, in order to move the office into the attic, they need to install a staircase, add some windows, electrics, phones and decorate at a cost of £43,000 (although this space will then be rent free). To that end, they have set up a crowdfunding site on Spacehive which is now active. They have managed to raise £9,576 already. But in order to attract larger funds from external organisations including the council, they need to show that the foodbank is valued in the community, so what they really need is for hundreds of people to donate just £2 (or more if they can). Although they need to raise lots of money, it’s the number of donors that is most important at this stage. The token amounts of as little as £2 are vitally important as they help express the community’s support.
