Year 2 (and a few siblings) learned that we use salt to grit the roads in the colder months because it lowers the freezing temperature of water. We applied this knowledge to 'thread' ice cubes by laying string across an ice cube, pouring enough salt to melt the surface and then the string became trapped in the ice cube as the surface refroze. The children had a further challenge of making a necklace fit for a penguin. A very cool real-life application of science!
