A number of reasons to love Parsons Green Prep’s Sudoku Day

Sudoku Day at PGP

We recently celebrated Parsons Green Prep’s Sudoku Day. Sudoku is not only a wonderfully calming and enjoyable activity but it also provides an excellent opportunity for children to develop their mathematical thinking and reasoning skills. It encourages logical problem solving, perseverance and attention to detail – all essential skills for success in maths and beyond. ‘Sudoku’ means ‘single number’ in Japanese and similar number puzzles rose to prominence in French newspapers in the 19th century.

Critical thinking

Our older children in Year 5 and Year 6 rose to the challenge of completing a traditional 9×9 Sudoku grid, which required real focus and strategic thinking. Year 4 tackled a slightly smaller 6×6 grid, while Year 3 and Year 2 worked on 4×4 puzzles, building confidence and fluency in logical reasoning. For those who wanted an extra challenge, some children even designed their own Sudoku puzzles for their teachers to solve. This creative twist really showcased their understanding of the rules and their ability to think critically.

Pre-prep gets involved

The younger children in Reception and Year 1, many of whom were experiencing Sudoku for the first time, were introduced to Sudoku-style puzzles with a twist. These included 2D and 3D shapes, as well as themed puzzles with space pictures or farmyard animals. Children cut out and physically manipulated the pieces, exploring the concept that the same shape or picture cannot appear more than once in a row or column. This hands-on approach was a fantastic way to develop reasoning skills and lay the foundations for more complex problem solving in Year 2 and beyond.

We are so proud of the resilience and determination shown by all our children. Activities like these do wonders for building confidence, strengthening reasoning and problem-solving skills and fostering a growth mindset.

Well done to everyone who took part – what a brilliant day of learning and fun.
