Parsons Green Prep works closely with a number of excellent local nurseries in Fulham. Today we caught up with Melrose House in Finlay Street for a quick Q&A.
What is the history of Melrose House?
Melrose House is at the Bishop’s Park end of Finlay Street. It has been a nursery school for over forty years and was previously known as Cygnets, before adopting the same name as its sister school in Southfields (which closed due to retirement in July 2025). Cygnets pupils are now sending their own children to Melrose House and stepping inside the 55 Finlay Street walls brings back many happy memories.
What is it that you offer?
We offer term-time education and childcare for 2 to 4-year-olds from 8.30am to 3.15pm. We accept 15 and 30-hour 2, 3 and 4-year-old funding.
As manager of the nursery, could you tell us a bit about your background?
Louise Hopkins, a qualified teacher, is the headmistress. Her children went to Melrose House and once they were at school she joined Melrose House as a member of staff in 2015. She took over the running of the nursery in September 2020. Melrose House is owed by Ruth Oates, who was head of Melrose House, Southfields. Her daughter, Caroline O’Gorman, ran the nursery for a number of years after completing her PGCE and MA in Education and gaining experience as a teacher at Eaton House the Manor. She is the administrator for the nursery school as she now has her own children.
Could you let us know something unique about the nursery?
The nursery school operates on the ground floor of a privately owned home. The children are split into two rooms, the Caterpillars (2 to 3-year-olds) and Butterflies (3 to 4-year-olds). The nursery school has an enclosed garden. We also pride ourselves on the one-to-one tuition each child receives daily at Melrose House. These specialist activities go above and beyond the scope of the usual EYFS framework and drive children to excel in their nursery school and future school life. It is what Melrose House has built its foundation on; strong, purposeful and thorough tuition. We have excellent staff-to-child ratios and highly qualified staff.
Does Melrose House have any exciting plans or dreams for the future?
We have built a secure and stable nursery business and we are looking forward to continuing the quality education provision to the children entrusted into our care. Our dreams for the future are for the children: from small Melrosians, mighty oaks grow!
